Just saying HELLO again!
.
- Hello from the oldest. (In a manner of speaking.) ;)
.
Meow.
hey hey!
me too
Howdy!
How ya been?
Not (too) old here, but former member as well :)
Ribbit
Welcome to our doom.
Some of us are here.
Raises hand.
Yup.
I agree with RMG. Yup.
Lurker there, less so here... Can still remember almost shitting myself the first time I read Matt's "This is P.O." bit in 2008... :) And the second...
Hee haw!
Lurker.
so wait, there are people here who aren't former LATOCers?
G'day
Yep. Threw those shorts out... Actually several pair were ruined in the first year or two of 'knowing'. Collapse has been occurring in much the same way we talked about it. It is just like the frog in the boiling water....
Draftlady
was there am here
I was there and am here, too. I forget what my name was 'back in the day', but since I'm older than dirt (81 y/o), I guess I'm allowed. I do lurk still, however. It's great to see all the old timers still on board.
I used to be there too- didn't post much then, or now ;-)
I mostly lurked at LATOC. Found it in 2006 and haven't been the same since. ;)
I was at LATOC, and here, too. Don`t post much, but read almost every day. Mt 70th is coming up in a few months. Us "mature" types seem to be well represented. :p
Heya.
I was on latoc from the very beginning (in late 2005?). I enjoyed the lively discussion and debates though I rolled my eyes with Matt's red alert and double red alerts on his new page. I was in my mid thirties when latoc started and am in my mid fourties now. For me at least, a lot (deaths in family, financial upheaval/business implosion, discovering psychic phenomena/life after death, new friendships, getting cabin in woods) changed over the years though my overall outlook has not.
BTW, does anyone know what happened to Jeromie?
I'm glad you asked Zac, I would like to know where Jeromie is. My memory gets fuzzy but I seem to recall he abandoned LATOC when he correctly called the natural gas fracking revolution which did come to pass. I seem to recall posters were all over him on his views about this. He was right....natural gas today is $2.80 US / MMBtu. At one point 8 years ago I think the number was about $15.00 /MMBtu. I really enjoyed his posts, he made sense. Disclaimer, I'm assuming Jeromie was a male - I just can't remember...no matter, made a lot of sense.
Jeromie was banned for being right. He's not the only person that happened to.....
Yeah, I remember that whole phase with Jeromie. I thought Jeromie was terribly bright and was disappointed at the disappearance of such a lucid poster from LATOC. Sometimes, though, people just disappear from our circles, both virtually and otherwise....for a whole slew of reasons. It is cool to look back and realize I've been fraternizing with some of youse since 2003 when I joined LATOC....That was one of the very first forums I ever joined and I lurked for almost two years before saying a peep! So much to wrap my poor head around, and I was kinda intimidated by them doomers :p
Yep, this seems to be the forum that stuck the most for me post-LATOC.
Trust me, doomers are over rated, LOL. I miss level headed people like Jeromie. He brought a tempered and thoughtful position to the discussion. Intelligence is not to be tolerated, sometimes. I'll give a couple of examples - the "birthers" - those who think President Obama is not a valid US citizen - utterly and remarkably daft. The other example is one that is near and dear to this forum - namely that 9/11 was a government conspiracy and the buildings in NY were brought down by previously planted explosives. I have never read such horsesh*t in my entire life - it eclipses the so called Kennedy assassination conspiracy. Sorry, I ain't buying the crap....
Hi anarchist. I was on LATOC but only for a few years, not as long as many others.
Oh, I'm SURE he's a valid US citizen, but NOT sure he was born here. But you know what? Just like another remnant of the past(sound money, backed by gold and silver), it doesn't matter one whit to me whether he was born here or not. In fact, since it's obvious we "can't get good help anymore", locally, we should open up the opportunity to be POTUS to ANY US citizen, born here or not. This way, *I* could run ;)Quote:

Don't tell me you really believe the "Official Story"??Quote:

These days I am very active in the FaceBook group, Near Term Human Extinction Support Group. After reading Guy McPherson and Robin Westenra I had an aha moment and realized that all the years of prepping and building my doomstead don't mean shit because of run away climate change and global warming. I have spent the last decade preparing for a world made by hand. However, it is useless when climate change totally messes up your growing season. Last year, I had no stone fruit in my orchard because of a hard freeze in May killing the blossoms. The only fruit I had were asian pears. My vegetable garden did fine and I was able to preserve food for the winter (we grow about 70% of the food we eat.)
I consider the LATOC members here to be my long term friends, sharing a common purpose. However, it is all turning to shite because you can't prep for 140 degree summers.
Peak oil is so last decade. NTHE is the new black.
Ha, yeah Swampman, I've been thinking the same too re Peak Oil.
Funny thing, we're now in "official drought" in much of NZ although at our place we're fortunate that we still have unlimited water. Hardly anything has been watered much this Summer though for one reason or another and yet EVERY fruit and nut tree and vine we have (grapevines in particular) is loaded with more fruit than it's ever had before. Even visitors are commenting on how much fruit there is going to be.
Heavy fruiting in these dry conditions? As my 83 year old father says Mother Nature knows something. I notice our old oak tree, which seems otherwise healthy, is throwing off big branches as well. It's never done that before.
Sometimes when an elderly female animal, say a mare or a bitch, begins to fail and get sick, lose condition etc you know what they'll very often do? Come in season. It's like Mother Nature thinks they should make one last ditch effort to reproduce again before they die even if the timing and circumstances are far from ideal.
Some of the pears are falling off the trees which means we should have swarms of bees feasting on them on the pathways like we always have had. Only this year - no bees on the pears. Where are all the bees?
Yo. Was on Latoc but didn't post much...I was pretty much a deer in the headlights then.
I'm one of the, ahem, "mature" folks. But older women rock, we know what we have, how to use it, and found a sense of humor about it. It's all good (till the SHTF)
good to see so many of us are still around (I started reading Matt's news headlines back in 04)
I didn't even know what a forum was back then or realize one existed - sorry I missed all the fun of the early years
it was a steep learning curve for me too - still learning
I started blogging much later - the H1N1 flu pandemic - it took awhile for me to find my voice
its been an interesting journey - watching doom and the evolution of doomers
and it feels a little odd being one of the youngsters in this crowd
unfortunately, I never had the close personal connections and emotional investment that some here have
but I still consider most of you friends, however real or virtual you may be
doomers tend to be a lonely bunch - doom watch a lonely business - its nice to have some sense of community/see familiar "faces" (even if its only an avatar)
for good or ill, LATOC changed my life ...as I suspect it did most of us
Dang Emeline, it was bad enough to hear NZ is in drought too, but for it to also not have bees as usual is really disturbing. It's probably from reading 'On the Beach', but I always think of NZ as the last holdout for normal. Not no mo', shit.
Agree with above comments about shitting ones pants when first reading latoc. I had heard Heinberg give a talk about the same time. He's still talking. Matt not so much, heh.
I don't shit my pants anymore. The shit is happening right outside. Mid Feb. here in upstate California and it is 78 degrees, the fruit trees are blooming, at least four weeks early, and fourth year of low water in the reservoirs. The east drowns in snow and we dry up in the west. Almost no snow in the mountains. There is enough water in the reservoirs to maybe muddle through another summer and pray for rain next winter. The Pacific is like a hot tub right now.
Someone (can't remember who) told me about Silent Country right when LATOC imploded. I think I was there for a couple of years or so.
Here.., present and accounted for(raises hand). I am glad to see so many senior members here. I feel down right young at age 52, soon to be 53 this March 8th, thank-you very much. I loved the old forum. It was a good way for me to my feet wet with what was wrong with this country and what was going on inside of me at the time. I still visit and lurk here. Especially when I need to get away from the Walmart society for a bit.
Posted at latoc, but lurk (much) here. I read “The Fourth Turning” in ’97 and started planning then. I attended the first US Transition Movement seminar in Boulder, CO in 2008 (but failed at getting local interest or involvement). I currently am urban homesteading (in part) in a small town in SE MN. To the extent possible, all of my food products are sourced from local farms and gardens. I process it myself, and store it for year-round consumption. Passive solar cuts heating/cooling expense. I am working on harvesting rain water. Latoc was a breath of fresh air (and a sanity-saver) at a time when you couldn’t talk doom to family, friends, co-workers or neighbors. Actually, still can’t. I too am a “boomer” doomer.
I sure miss my friend Jeromie... After L.O.T.O.C., Jeromie, JB and I (then the Black Knight), went over to Dr. Doom's site, were we accumulated almost 300 pages on the same thread which had over 60,000 views. Jeromie was one of the best informed articulate writers, I've ever encountered. Shortly after 2013, we finally gave it up. I suppose, since it was basically just the three of us posting, we pretty much said all that we wanted, conveying information, thoughts and theories. This much is certain, no one has ever influenced my view as much as this great man.
What's a year or so at this point? I think I was reading it in late 2004. Now we are down to months.
I still remember the photo in Santa Rosa where you were wearing a t-shirt and a forearm.
Joined latoc to read news and lurk after reading the essay after finding it because I searched for this silly phrase "peak oil" and just a month or three before the implosion. Was invited here by BSC I think who has long since disappeared :(
I am at the "whatever" stage. Living life and enjoying it and trying to not be a dick about it... ie not contributing more to the issues than I must to survive. Still progressing towards a goal of carbon neutral or even negative. Have 30 acres locked up that I intend to manage and protect.
If there must be dark days, let them be in my time... or something to that effect.
