I think that the issue is mostly with the browsers: in recent years, any site that does not use https:// is "insecure" even though something innocent (think looking at articles on Wikipedia) is hardly a way to lose your credit card info, especially if you don't type it. I think what happened, though, is that some developers or project people decided that since one cannot trust what some "people" (think, The Man) will do with the information they might glean from spying on what Wikipedia page you're looking at (have you been looking at the "wrong" pages?) that all people should strive to only look at secure https:// sites. I'm personally not quite that paranoid, but I appreciate the sentiment.
This forum might not have https:// support but that's fine by me.
