It said it was Chrome checking on it, then I had to log in using my email password.
Is it possible I have just given my email password to a phisher?

Maybe.

To to "Settings" in the upper right hand corner, next to "Log Out". Then on the left side toward the middle, under "My Account" you'll see "Edit Email and Password". Enter the new password in the upper and also the lower box.
